Sandy Lake Restoration Fellowship
The Summer Village of Sunrise Beach is proud to be actively participating in the Sandy Lake Restoration Fellowship, a collaborative initiative with neighboring municipalities and local partners, including the Summer Village of Sandy Beach, Alexander First Nations, Lac Ste Anne County, and Sturgeon County. Together, we are coordinating efforts to support lake health, emergency response, and overall community safety.
At our most recent meeting, participants discussed several important areas:
Lake Health:
The group reviewed historical information, current lake conditions, and overall health. Ideas for potential actions were discussed, which included exploring treatments, vegetation management, and funding opportunities. We are reaching out to Alberta Environment to request an on-site meeting with them and other partners to provide a firsthand view of our lake’s current state.
Fire & Emergency Response:
The Alexander First Nation’s Fire Department shared information about its resources and capabilities. Discussions focused on ways to strengthen regional fire protection and emergency services through collaboration, mutual aid agreements, and shared planning tools.
Community Safety & Planning:
The group also explored opportunities to enhance community security and the possible collaboration with Alexander First Nation to support this initiative alongside the RCMP.
The group developed a list of actionable items to achieve over the next two months. Additional work ahead include establishing a formal communication network and project management approach to coordinate these initiatives effectively. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for early January 2026.
This is an important long-term initiative, and we sincerely thank all participants for their time, expertise, and commitment as we navigate these efforts together. We also appreciate the community’s continued interest and support in improving the health of Sandy Lake and keeping our municipalities safe and resilient. We look forward to continuing this collaborative approach and working closely with all partners to support the well-being of both our community and the lake. We will continue to update residents on our efforts.
